Sony VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip Review: The Ultimate Compact Vlogging Accessory?
For content creators using compact mirrorless or point-and-shoot cameras, achieving stable one-handed shots while maintaining quick access to camera controls can be a constant struggle. Reaching around to press the shutter button or adjust zoom mid-shot often introduces camera shake or ruins framing. The Sony VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip directly addresses this production pain point.
Designed specifically to integrate with compact cameras like the Sony ZV-1 series and RX100 lineups, this dual-purpose accessory serves as both a secure handheld shooting grip and a stable tabletop tripod. Let’s evaluate if this compact grip deserves a permanent spot in your daily vlogging kit.

Key Features of the Sony VCT-SGR1
Sony engineered this pocket-sized grip to streamline the workflow of creators who need to quickly switch between handheld b-roll and stationary talking-head setups.
- Integrated Multi-Terminal Camera Control: A built-in cable runs from the top of the grip into your camera’s Multi-USB port. The handle houses rubberized tactile buttons that mirror your camera’s essential inputs: a photo shutter button, a video record trigger, and a smooth telephoto/wide (T/W) zoom rocker switch.
- Dual-Purpose Convertible Form Factor: The vertical handle splits and expands outward down the center line into three independent legs. This instantly transforms the handheld vlogging stick into a rigid, vibration-resistant tabletop tripod for stationary sit-down vlogs or time-lapse photography.
- Flexible Mechanical Tilting Mechanism: A physical locking wheel on the side of the mount head lets you smoothly adjust the vertical camera angle. The grip flexes up to 70 degrees upward or 100 degrees downward, making it easy to dial in low-angle detail shots or high-angle overhead perspectives.
- Featherlight Travel Footprint: Weighing just 93 grams and measuring roughly four inches long, the grip adds virtually no physical strain to your wrist or extra bulk to your daily gear bag.
Seamless Camera Ecosystem Integration
The VCT-SGR1 works purely via a direct hardware connection, bypassing the need for wireless pairing apps, internal batteries, or menu configurations:
- Plug-and-Play Architecture: The accessory draws no power from the camera and requires no separate battery. You simply mount your camera onto the standard 1/4-inch threaded screw, plug the cable into the Multi-Terminal port, and start shooting immediately.
- Native Power Management: The physical buttons wake the camera instantly when pressed, allowing you to capture spontaneous moments without needing to reach for the camera’s main power switch.
- Ergonomic Safety Wrist Strap: The bottom of the handle houses a dedicated loop anchor for the included security strap, giving you extra peace of mind when filming over water or hanging out of moving vehicles.
