Sony NP-FZ100 Review: The Ultimate High-Capacity Mirrorless Camera Battery
For years, mirrorless camera users had to accept a major compromise: a compact camera body meant using tiny batteries that required frequent swaps mid-shoot. The Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery completely solves this problem.
Introduced alongside Sony’s third-generation full-frame mirrorless systems, this original Z-series power cell delivers more than double the capacity of legacy W-series batteries (like the NP-FW50). It has become the gold standard for wedding photographers, event videographers, and content creators who require uninterrupted all-day shooting performance. Let’s analyze its technical hardware specifications, capabilities, and camera compatibility matrix.
Sony NP-FZ100 Technical Specifications Overview
Built with high-density lithium-ion cells to provide continuous, high-current power without voltage drop-offs, the original NP-FZ100 maintains a highly efficient performance layout:

Key Features of the Sony NP-FZ100 Original Battery
Sony engineered this Z-series block to match the high-performance demands of high-resolution sensors and high-frame-rate video capture.
- Massive 2280 mAh Power Reserve: Holding an impressive 16.4 Watt-hours of energy, a single NP-FZ100 allows photographers to capture roughly 600 to 800 frames per charge under CIPA standards (and often well over 1,500 shots in real-world burst modes). For video creators, it delivers up to 120–150 minutes of continuous 4K video recording.
- Intelligent InfoLITHIUM Technology Link: The battery incorporates an advanced micro-processor that communicates directly with your Alpha camera’s imaging engine. It transmits a precise, 1% increment remaining power readout straight to your camera’s LCD screen or electronic viewfinder, completely eliminating guesswork.
- No Memory Effect Degradation: The modern lithium-ion chemistry ensures that you can charge or top-up the battery at any stage of depletion. Charging a half-full battery will not cause memory retention issues or shorten the overall lifespan of the core cells.
- Advanced Safety and Thermal Regulation: The original Sony casing features built-in circuitry to guard against overcharging, short-circuiting, and excessive current draws. It regulates heat exceptionally well, ensuring the camera remains cool during long, high-bitrate video takes.
Deep Camera Ecosystem Compatibility Matrix
The physical structure and power draw of the Z-series NP-FZ100 natively support multiple generations of Sony’s premium full-frame and APS-C bodies:
- Sony Alpha Full-Frame Workhorses: Powers the standard a7 III, a7 IV, a7R III, a7R IV, a7R V, a7S III, and a9 series.
- Sony Alpha Flagship and Compact Models: Drives the flagship a1, the compact full-frame a7C and a7C II lines, and the specialized a7CR.
- Sony Cinema Line Cameras: Natively slides into the compact FX3 and FX30 cinema rigs, offering robust runtimes for independent filmmakers.
- Premium APS-C and Vlog Cameras: Powers high-tier APS-C models like the a6700 and the interchangeable-lens vlogging flagship ZV-E1.
