Sony GP-VPT2BT Wireless Shooting Grip Review: The Ultimate Mobile & Vlogging Tool?
Finding a stabilizer that seamlessly balances mobile smartphone filming with dedicated mirrorless camera work can be a logistical headache. Most wireless grips are locked strictly into camera ecosystems, while phone gimbals require bloated applications and frequent balancing. The Sony GP-VPT2BT Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander redefines this space by bridging the gap between professional mirrorless rigs and advanced mobile creators.
While engineered natively as a cable-free Bluetooth solution for Sony Alpha and ZV-series cameras, it transforms into an incredibly robust, professional smartphone rig when paired with an external phone clamp. Let’s evaluate if this premium wireless grip justifies its flagship status for dual camera and mobile workflows.

Key Features of the Sony GP-VPT2BT
Sony packed deep operational automation and physical adjustments into this wireless commander to eliminate workflow friction.
- Cable-Free Bluetooth Command Center: The grip connects natively via Bluetooth, completely removing trailing USB or Multi-Terminal control cords. The handle features tactile buttons mapping out a dual-stage photo shutter (with half-press autofocus), a dedicated movie record button, a smooth zoom toggle, and a lock switch.
- Smartphone & Native Xperia Interoperability: When utilizing select Sony Xperia smartphones, the GP-VPT2BT connects directly to activate the system’s stock Photo Pro and Video Pro capture suites. For third-party iPhone or Android devices, attaching a standard 1/4″-20 phone clamp turns the grip into an ultra-stable, physical handling rig.
- Instant 360-Degree Selfie Flip Button: When vlogging or transitioning from a first-person perspective to a forward-facing B-roll setup, you don’t need to unmount the camera. Pressing a heavy-duty mechanical button on the head neck allows you to rotate the mount 360 degrees effortlessly.
- Heavy-Duty Tabletop Tripod Conversion: The contoured, textured handle splits outwards into three wide-set legs. This creates a remarkably stable tabletop tripod capable of holding full-size setups up to 1.5 kg without tipping.
Advanced Control Architecture & Weatherproofing
The design mechanics ensure the grip functions reliably during demanding travel shoots:
- Programmable C1 Custom Button: The face of the grip includes a dedicated C1 button. When paired with an Alpha or ZV camera body, it mirrors the custom button profile on your camera, allowing you to trigger features like “Product Showcase” or “Background Defocus” straight from the handle.
- Dust and Moisture-Resistant Sealing: Unlike standard plastic selfie sticks, the joints, button perimeters, and battery door feature rubber gaskets, keeping the internal electronics safe during outdoor rain showers or dusty shoots.
- No Camera Battery Drain: Because the controller runs entirely off its own long-lasting CR2032 watch battery, it won’t siphon precious operational power from your camera or smartphone.
- Fine-Tuned Friction Adjustment Wheel: A physical dial on the side of the tilting axis lets you loosen or tighten the tilting stiffness to match the exact weight of your camera or phone rig.
