Sony BC-TRW Battery Charger Review: The Essential Travel Charger for W-Series Batteries
Relying on in-camera USB charging to replenish your camera batteries can severely limit your production momentum. It ties up your primary camera body, exposes delicate internal ports to wear, and prevents you from shooting and charging simultaneously. The Sony BC-TRW W-Series Battery Charger is designed specifically to eliminate this operational bottleneck.
Engineered as an ultra-compact desktop and travel charging hub for Sony’s widely used NP-FW50 batteries, this original accessory delivers a highly regulated, safe electrical current. Let’s break down its technical specifications, hardware design features, and real-world efficiency.
Sony BC-TRW Technical Specifications Overview

Key Features of the Sony BC-TRW Original Charger
Sony optimized the BC-TRW to provide maximum safety and portability for creators working on tight schedules in unpredictable environments.
- Retractable Fold-Away AC Prongs: The physical rear housing features built-in electrical prongs that fold completely flush into the charger body. This cordless, integrated design eliminates trailing wires and prevents loose metal prongs from scratching delicate lenses or filters inside your gear bag.
- Progressive LED Charge Indicator: A bright indicator lamp on the front face of the chassis keeps you informed of real-time power restoration. The LED displays clear charging status metrics and shuts off automatically the exact moment the micro-cells reach 100% capacity to prevent overcharging.
- Universal Global Voltage Architecture: Built to safely accept alternating currents anywhere from 100V up to 240V, this charger is globally ready. Travel filmmakers can plug it securely into international electrical grids using a basic local pin adapter.
- Multi-Fault Circuit Protection: The original first-party hub incorporates advanced thermal cut-offs and short-circuit protection. It continuously monitors the battery’s temperature curve, shielding your expensive NP-FW50 cells from long-term voltage degradation or overheating.
Camera Ecosystem Battery Compatibility
The BC-TRW charger is the dedicated charging companion for the NP-FW50 battery, which powers a massive lineage of Sony camera bodies:
- Sony Alpha a6000 Series: Natively supports popular compact mirrorless options including the a6000, a6100, a6300, a6400, and a6500.
- Legacy Full-Frame Alpha Systems: Recharges the cells for full-frame mirrorless models like the a7, a7R, a7S, a7 II, a7R II, and a7S II.
- Sony ZV-E10 Vlog Camera: Refuels the primary power cell for the first-generation interchangeable-lens vlogging camera.
- Premium Cyber-shot RX Bridge Cameras: Fits the high-draw batteries used inside the RX10, RX10 II, RX10 III, and RX10 IV series
