Canon PowerShot SX740 HS Review: The Ultimate Pocket-Sized 40x Travel Zoom?
When packing light for vacations, city explorations, or outdoor excursions, bringing along a heavy DSLR rig with multiple lenses is often out of the question. Yet, relying solely on a smartphone means missing out on distant architectural details, far-off wildlife, or clear stage views. The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS Digital Camera elegant breaks this barrier by packing an astonishing 40x optical zoom range into a slim, pocketable body profile.
By matching a long-range telescoping lens with a modern image processor and a 180-degree flip-up screen, this travel-centric point-and-shoot replaces bulky gear bags with a true standalone zoom tool. Let’s evaluate if this pocket power house belongs in your travel kit.

Key Features of the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS
The SX740 HS relies on intense optical miniaturization and fast digital processing to make long-range handheld capture intuitive and accessible.
- Massive 40x Optical Zoom (24mm to 960mm Equivalent): The defining capability of this camera is its incredible focal reach packed into a pocket-sized frame. The wide 24mm end captures expansive group vacation photos and city street landscapes with ease. Twisting the top zoom lever extends the lens barrel outward to a staggering 960mm equivalent, letting you frame moon craters, safari wildlife, or distant monuments clearly.
- 180-Degree Selfie Flip-Up LCD Screen: The high-resolution 3.0-inch rear monitor tilts completely upward on a robust hinge mechanism, facing 180 degrees forward. This design allows solo travel vloggers and families to compose self-facing photos and travel videos cleanly without cutting off framing.
- Dual Sensing Optical Image Stabilization: Long-range telephoto shooting magnifies micro hand shakes significantly, creating blurry images and shaky videos. To neutralize this physical limitation, the camera incorporates an advanced lens-shift image stabilizer that balances out hand tremors to keep handheld shots crisp at telephoto focal distances.
- Blazing Fast 10 fps Continuous Burst Mechanics: Driven by the raw computing throughput of the premium DIGIC 8 engine, the camera fires off continuous bursts at up to 10.0 frames per second. This speed makes it highly effective for locking down fast-moving vacation action, active pets, or sudden sporting events.
- Zoom Framing Assist Automation: Finding a subject at a 960mm focal distance can be frustrating if they step out of frame. The camera features a dedicated Zoom Framing Assist shortcut button on the back panel. Pressing it instantly zooms the lens backward to let you relocate your subject, snapping right back into position when you release the button.
Modern Connected Workflow & Studio Interoperability
The internal system architecture simplifies data offloading and vacation asset sharing seamlessly:
- Native 4K Video and 4K Frame Cropping: The camera captures crisp 4K Ultra HD videos at up to 30p. The internal software architecture allows you to extract high-resolution 4K still frames directly from your recorded footage in-camera, ensuring you never miss a spontaneous action frame.
- Continuous Wireless App Syncing: The camera maintains a low-energy Bluetooth handshake with your phone. Through the free Canon Camera Connect application, it transfers full-resolution files instantly over high-speed Wi-Fi, allowing you to upload travel logs to social feeds seamlessly.
- Automatic GPS Geotagging: By tapping into your smartphone’s location sensors via the background Bluetooth link, the camera writes precise latitude and longitude tracking coordinates directly into the EXIF data layer of each file.
